STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF DEMOCRACY
Composition
Democracy is a form of government in which citizens have a strong influence on decision-making and the government. Ancient Greece is considered to be a beginning of it. Literally democracy means ruling by people. This system has supporters and opponents as well, which means that it must have advantages and disadvantages. In my work I will try to bring pros and cons of this system.
Democracy is regarded as the best political system, so I will start with advantages. One of them, and probably the most important, is the fact that all grown-up citizens have a big impact on political and social life of the country. Decisions are made in accordance with the will of majority. We recognize direct and indirect democracy. In indirect democracy decisions are made by choosen by citizens representatives, e.g. councilors, MPs. Direct democracy guarantee the residents of the country the opportunity of accepting solutions in referendum or plebiscite.
The next important advantage of this system is the range of rights equal for all people, regardless of race, nationality and religion. These rights are inalienable, that is you cannot get rid of them, they cannot be limited or taken. Rights are divided to personal with the right to life, the right to a fair trial and the right to protect life and health, freeedom of speech, thoughts and religion.
It is interesting that the most famous place in the world where everybody is free to say anything he or she thinks, not offending anybody, is Hyde Park in London.
We know also political rights and freedoms e.g. the right to freedom of association, the right to citizenship, elections and also social, cultural and economical rights. There is also right to education. In a democratic country the rights of minorities are protected. Another argument showing the strong point of rule of people is fact that government is choosen from socjety and anybody can run for councilor, MP, senator.
This system, however has its drawback. One of the major is fact that most of citizens do not have to be right and the decision may be wrong. Following this line we can see that minority must submit and cannot do anything about wrong decisions after they were taken. Another argument proving the drawbacks of democracy is the fact that not all decisions can
be taken by a vote, e. g. it is impossible to raise taxes by voting while it is bad for citizens. In democracy it is difficult to make decision quickly. It happens in democratic countries that on the high-level positions are elected wrong, corrupted people. In the democratic countries there are often conflicts among ruling people and lacks of permanent government.
In my opinion in my essay I showed many strong and week sides of democracy. I think that all systems have advantages and disadvantages but we have more advantages in democracy. Disadvantages of democracies are caused mainly by human characters of ruling people but for citizens this system is advantages and provides them security, and development for their country.
PORTUGAL
The word "Democracy" is connected to the idea that the citizens have the right to take part in some decisions that may change their lives, directly or not.
I strongly believe that democracy is the most important thing that citizens have because without it, citizens would not be able to say if they agree or not with the decisions that the Government makes. Those decisions can change everyone’s life and without democracy the Government would rule us according to their way of thinking, and that, most of the time, would not be fair to everyone.
Democracy is all about being free to express our thoughts, our ideas, is about not being afraid of saying out loud what we want, unlike what used to happen in the past.
